What type of modem do I need?

Lana Uliano: you can get a cheaper modem/router , att&t don't products modems. Try with ebay or amazon and confirm the compatibility with the seller.

Ruthe Real: I wouldn't spend $60 for a plain DSL modem. If you are going to spend the monthly fees for broadband DSL Internet, you'll want to maximize your investment.By this, I mean you'll want to connect your DSL connection to a wireless router. This will enable you to connect all types of Internet enabled devices such as cell phones, video game consoles, Ipods, tablets, smart TVs, laptops, etc. Even if you don't use any of these devices today, practically all new technology is geared around having a wireless broadband connection, and if you need to buy a add on router later, you'll spend more. Many newer DSL modems are combination units that combine a DSL modem with a wireless router. It is a good idea to include a router with your DSL or cable modem even if you are only going to connect one computer. The benefit is th! at the router acts as a hardware firewall between your computer and the Internet. Someone looking in from the outside can not see past the router, therefore your computer is protected from external attack originating from the Internet. However, this will not prevent malicious software on your PC from accessing the Internet. You should also have a software Internet firewall and anti-virus software installed on your computer for complete protection. You don't have to get the modem or gateway from the DSL provider. You can buy them at Amazon, such as this Actiontec ADSL2+ modem and combination 300 Mbps wireless N router.http://isp1.us/reviews/actiontec-gt784wn-dsl-modem... It is compatible with virtually all major DSL service providers including At&t, Verizon, Qwest, Frontier, Centurylink, and most other DSL Internet services. It costs about $65.00 from Amazon with free shipping and no tax. EDIT:Sorry I overlooked the end of your question: You'll absolutely need a wireless conne! ction to connect your Wii. If I had to guess, I would say the ! $60 At&t modem doesn't include wireless routing functions. I would check with them though. If it is a combo DSL modem/wireless router then $60 is a pretty decent deal.Good Luck......Show more

Stephnie Patout: I agree that $60 does seem expensive for a modem, however, if you go with the ATT modem then they have a responsibility to make sure it works. If you buy your own modem, then it is your responsibility to solve any problems. If you want to have more than one device active on the Internet such as a computer and the Wii, or you are considering a wireless laptop or a mobile phone with WiFi capability in the future, then you are probably better spending $85 and getting the ATT wireless gateway. Some years ago I bought a DSL device on the open market rather than getting it from my Internet Service Provider. It took me about a week to get all the settings to make it work properly....Show more
