Lester Haschke: Alternative fuel vehicles not only reduce our reliance on foriegn oil and gas, but they also are a cleaner way to travel. Since hybrid cars use both gasoline and a battery, they emit less pollutants than a "regular" car. Such pollutants, such as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide; etc; can affect the environment in different ways. Too much exposure to such pollutants cause dirty air and can affect plants and animals adversely, as well. They also have an affect on humans. Such affects can be respiratory problems, skin/eye/throat irritation, as well as others. The nitrogen oxides released from the exhaust can separate and then link up with oxygen (O2) in the air to form ozone (O3). Ozone is a very harmful pollutant that can have various effects on human and environmental health. This does not cause ozone depletion, though. Ozone is good and keeps us warm when it is in the stratosphere, I believe, and not good when it is in our atmosphere.Hope this helps! !...Show more
Delmy Varano: Alternative fuel vehicles at the time do not really help the environment at the time, but the idea is that in the future, you can make those fuels from other places. Like.. ethanol... fermenting it. And batteries... you can get the energy from solar panels.
Pamela Meno: The manufacturing of new cars comes at a tremendous cost in materials and energy so any new car damages the environment in the short run. The benefit of alternative fuel vehicles only exists if the fuel is not from fossil reserves since using fossil reserves is basically liberating carbon and hydrogen that had been entombed for millions of years by nature into our environment reacting them with oxygen causing a net increase of CO2, H2O and a net decrease in O2 in our environment. What people don't realize is that even conventional fuels like gasoline and diesel can be synthesized and doesn't have to be refined from fossil reserves. The technology dates back to ! the 1920's and has and is being used on a commercial scale. ! One of the ways we meet the new ultra low sulfur requirements is to mix our refined diesel with synthetic diesel. When researchers at Sandia Labs looked into finding a more efficient way of producing hydrogen from H2O, they realize that the same procedure could produce CO from CO2 and that with a mixture of CO and H2, you could synthesize any linear hydrocarbon including gasoline and diesel thereby achieving the goals of chemically storing energy from clean sources like solar, wind, hydro and nuclear for use in our vehicles but without replacing any vehicles or constructing any new infrastructure.Synthetic fuels have another benefit, if the syngas is produced by gasification of biomass such as trash and dried sewage and the charcoal byproduct used as biochar, the fuel cycle becomes carbon negative sequestering not CO2 but carbon itself thereby reducing CO2 levels and liberating the O2 from it's CO2 grave. Sequestering just CO2 as is being proposed by so many, results in a ! reduction of O2 and an increase in CO2 levels, this was one of the reasons why Biosphere 2 "failed" as the CO2 was being sequestered by reactions in the concrete. What "alternative" fuel vehicles do is harm the environment in the short term though it may benefit the environment in the long run, sell more cars that are probably not needed and stimulate the economy. As to purely environmental benefits, all the benefits of alternative fuel vehicles can be achieved with the current vehicles simply by changing how we make the current fuels. One possible consequence of promoting alternative fuel vehicles instead of changing how we make our fuel is that we may loose our best opportunity to undo some of the damage we have done by sequestering the carbon as biochar....Show more

Frank Crummell: ok, the whole, get a hybrid or electric viehecle, i think is retarted... yes they are less polluting than regular fuel cars, but did u ever think, how do they make thies cars? well ill tell you something not alot of people consider. the frames are made of metal, the warehouses they are built in, are made of metal, the machines used in the assembely line are made of metal. and where does this metal come from? duh, ore mines. and how exactly do they mine this "ore"? they use explosives, and then what, they haul away the ore r! ich dirt to the proccesing plant. wait, what do they use to transport the dirt? they use thies huge exavators to load thies huge trucks. now thies huge truck run on diesel. and thies huge machines are all made of steal, mostly. now the proccessing plants where them forge the metal, well they are in huge warehouses, that are also made of metal. in all any vehicle that is manufactured, is in some way responsible for polution. and that is just cars, think about thies huge windmils that are made to produce energy. think about how they are made and how they are instaled... so i dont think alternative fuel vehicles do anything for the environment....Show more
